Making Materials for the Atrium

By Lisa Fix
“The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice.  He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.  When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.” (John 10:3-4)
I’ll be the first person to tell you that when it comes to making materials for the Atrium, I was not that person in the beginning.  In the early spring of 2019, Jesus called me, “Lisa we still have works to do.” I had no idea what He meant by “works?” In June I signed up for The Catechesis of The Good Shepherd course being held through the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s, Summer Institute.  I had no idea what CGS was? This 3-day course led me to The Level I formation of CGS and I soon realized I was way out of my comfort zone. I kept asking Jesus, “Seriously?  You are calling me for this?  I have to build an Atrium? What’s an Atrium? Works? What do you mean by “works”?  I don’t do crafts Jesus?  I don’t use a saw? What’s a scroll saw? I don’t know how to operate these tools?  I don’t sew?  I don’t color?  I don’t paint? A plant, I have to keep a plant alive?  How am I going to do all this by myself? Seriously?  I have to sing? I don’t sing and I don’t know any of these songs? Jesus, I don’t…. seriously?  Jesus, “I have a health issue, even if I set aside all that I don’t know how to do, how am I to be a catechist when I am suffering with all this pain?” I felt Christ put his hand on my shoulder and I relaxed.  I told Him, “Ok. I don’t know how this is all going to work, but Jesus, I trust you.  So, yes, I will build an Atrium with you.”
After many setbacks I finally began to make the materials for the Atrium in the summer of 2024.  I started with the Good Shepherd and the sheep fold.  I was nervous but as soon as I began, I relaxed.

With the undertaking of the “works” of making materials my relationship with Jesus began to grow deeper.  This formation as a CGS catechist brought me closer to Him with a greater understanding of my own growth and opening myself to accept that growth within.  By working with my hands, I began to understand the worth of these “works.”  In the silence of focusing on the making of the material I found myself listening.  I was listening to the inner teacher and He was working within me.  My heart was lifted up with much peace, gentleness, love and kindness.  For example, while painting the 2-D figures for the Eucharistic Presence I wondered about all the people of the world.  I thought about how much GOD Loves ALL the people.  How much love He has when creating each and every one of us.  I also thought about how much fun He must have with creating all of creation.

Material making brings a sense of peace.  With quieting myself, working with my hands, focusing outwardly and listening inwardly I felt still and calm.  With this stillness came an awareness that my heart was opening to a deeper relationship with Christ.  As if all of time stops and it is just me & Him.  I would feel happiness in what I was working on and joy because I was with Jesus, drawing closer to him.  As my love for Jesus grew, I would think about how the children also would be doing their “works” with these materials while listening to Him as He calls them by name, teaches them and their love for Him would grow.

Peace, Happiness, Joy, Kindness, Gentleness, Love and Patience have all lifted up my heart.  I realized as I worked my way through material making that each “works” requires different gifts and talents and even though I did not know “how-to” I could “do.” I trusted Jesus, left my comfort zone and took my time.  If I made a mistake while painting I could re-paint.  I also could ask for help and I did.  Yes, Jesus gave me a helper to do these important “works” in the Atrium.  My husband Joe is that helper.  Jesus completely trusts Joe with all “tools; saws, drills, hammers, etc.”  Jesus, Joe and I are in complete agreement that I should not operate any tools.  Joe continues to guide me in all of my many questions like “How do I do this? “or “Really I should have used some white paint so the green wouldn’t be so green?”  “Two coats of polyurethane on everything?” My husband Joe and I have both grown and deepened our relationship with Christ both as a couple and individually while making the materials.

I have such a passion for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.  Back in 2019 I realized that I was called because GOD’s purpose for me was now the time that He had planned.  I told the whole class of Catechists and my formation Leader and her Assistant that “I now know my purpose.  Now I understand why I was born, went through all the good, bad and ugly in my life.  It was because it brought me to this point in time.  This is what GOD had planned for me, my purpose. It is now at this point in time.”  This realization meant I would be stepping outside of my comfort zone; it meant that I acknowledged my complete trust in Jesus, it meant that GOD’s timing is GOD’s timing.

“And we know that in all things GOD works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.”  (Romans 8:28)

Between the years 2019 – 2024 I had tremendous setbacks and hurdles.  Despite all of this I knew my purpose and continued to move forward in building an Atrium.  GOD’s timing is always perfect and is not our timing.  I kept my faith and never let go of the Good Shepherd.  During those years I collected much furniture, glassware, baskets, religious photos, figurines, nativity sets, etc.… I was building the Atrium and my house was home to all that I acquired.  In the summer of 2024, I was able to move into Room #1 at my parish.  The parish held onto this room for CGS through all these years with its own challenges.  I began the “works” of material making that August.
Jesus continues to show me my many gifts & talents.  My trusting and listening to him has opened my heart so that He can continue to nurture the child within me.  Thus, bringing me closer in relationship with GOD.

“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. “(Matthew 18:4)

Making materials is always ongoing.  With the many directions, steps, how-to’s and the amount of time dedicated to these “works” I became more aware of the time GOD spends creating.  He doesn’t have directions, steps or how-to’s either.  I did wonder “just how much time does GOD spend on creation?”  Then I realized GOD is always creating.  Creation never ends.   With material making you will always be making and listening to Jesus who is always teaching you, desiring you to come closer to him in all that you think, say and do.  Creation with in one’s self is always ongoing, just like the making of the materials.

My everyday life outside the Atrium also began to change with the “works” of making material.  I look at creation around me, and those I interact with each day differently.  I have grown more consciously aware of how I respect myself, others, surroundings and how I go about my day.  I discovered that I do have much more patience, peace, joy, happiness, kindness and love within to share.

Back in 2019 I asked, “What is an Atrium?”   “An Atrium is a place in which the only teacher is Christ; both children and adults place themselves in a listening stance before His Word and seek to penetrate the mystery of the liturgical celebration.”
As my husband Joe and I do the “works” of building the Atrium and making materials for the children to work with while they listen to Jesus, our inner teacher, I am reminded of what Jesus said,

“Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” (Matthew 19:14)

We are all of GOD’s creation.  We are all of GOD’s children.

On April 5th, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Apostolate Center welcomed nearly 80 catechists, assistants, and friends of the atrium for a joyful day of learning, fellowship, and spiritual renewal. Representing communities from Cleveland, Canton, Steubenville, West Virginia, Greensburg, and across the Diocese of Pittsburgh, attendees gathered to reconnect and reflect on the sacred work of CGS.

We were honored to host Mary Mirrione, National Director of CGSUSA, and Karen Maxwell, CGSUSA Director of Formation, whose presence reminded us of our shared mission and the strength of our wider CGS community. The keynote address by Fr. Boniface Hicks, OSB—Benedictine monk, spiritual director, and author—was a highlight of the day. In his powerful talk, Fr. Boniface reflected on the role of CGS catechists as spiritual directors to children, drawing on his deep experience in the field of spiritual formation. His address is now available to view below thanks to Anita Wright of the Institute for Ministry Formation.
The CGSAC CASA committee lead by Nancy Amorose created a beautiful, welcoming environment, enhanced by a delicious meal from Remo’s Catering, desserts provided by CASA, and cookies generously donated by Br. Andre’s Café. We’re also grateful to Lisa Kelly of the Good Shepherd Closet for providing thoughtful CGS giveaways, and to Bobbie Anne Abson, who captured the spirit of the day through her photography.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this gathering such a success. It is the friendship of the catechists that gives us energy for this ministry. May the bonds formed and the insights shared continue to inspire and renew our work with the children in the weeks and months to come. Click here for more photos.

Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

Many of us are celebrating Pentecost with the children in the atrium and are witnessing their excitement about finally having a red cloth on the prayer table! They are delighted to see seven red candles lit, eager to light one of their own. Even the youngest children carefully choose one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, lighting their candle from the one representing that gift. I am always amazed at how they ponder which gift they want and how many of them even choose "Fear of the Lord" which we also know as "Wonder and Awe," a gift they have naturally which has been nourished throughout the year in the atrium. So many candles! So much Light! So many gifts!

We at CGSAC have felt the presence of the Holy Spirit for the entire year. Many visitors have expressed their joy, wonder, and awe when touring the atria. Catechists who participate in our courses express their gratitude for being able to see the spiral method with the progression of the materials from Level I through Level II and culminating in Level III. As we conclude Level I and II courses, we are preparing to host the July course for Level III part 1 with national formation leader Donna Turner and catechists from 10 different states including local catechists from Pittsburgh and Greensburg. Workshops and CGS study group sessions will be announced soon as well as registrations for CGS fall sessions for children.

We are tremendously grateful for the dedicated volunteers and growing staff at CGSAC. To keep up with our growth and future plans, we trust that God will provide for our needs. We invite you to ponder how CGS has been a gift in your life and how God is calling you to share your gifts with children, families, and other catechists. Will God be working through you? Which gifts of time, talent, and treasure is God asking for you to share?
In Christ,
~Celine

The April open house welcomed families and those interested in CGS for a day of information and formation. It was beautiful to watch the children and adults alike be drawn towards the atria, full of wonder and questions. Several of the children had a chance to experience the atrium for the first time and were able to reflect and do works. Some were given the Good Shepherd presentation and recognized the readings from Mass. “ I am the Good Shepherd; I call them by name...” was echoed joyously.

Lent for Little Ones

The Lent for Little Ones sessions at CGSAC marked a significant milestone as our first-ever offering for children in the atrium, welcoming little ones from 20 months up to 3 years of age along with their caregivers. These sessions were thoughtfully designed to immerse the children in prayers, songs, and hands-on activities in a specially prepared environment. The curriculum was rich with materials related to the life of Jesus and the Holy Mass, crafted to engage and inspire our youngest members. The program culminated beautifully in an interactive bread-baking activity, followed by a shared meal, echoing the significance of communion and the Last Supper Jesus shared with his friends. This gathering was not only a spiritual journey but also a heartfelt opportunity for our community's youngest to connect with the foundational stories of faith through sensory-rich experiences. Be on the lookout for information on more offerings for children coming soon!

Last Saturday's Advent Retreat, "Walking in the Light," was a beautiful morning of prayer and reflection at the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Apostolate Center. The event began with a warm welcome and a light breakfast, setting the tone for a morning  filled with spiritual enrichment.

Deacon Nick Clinton, the keynote speaker, led an inspiring reflection on the true meaning of Christmas. His insights provided a deeper understanding of the Advent prophecies, setting the stage for the breakout sessions that followed.

The retreat offered sessions tailored to both Level I and Level 2 prophecies, allowing participants to delve into the teachings that resonated with their spiritual journey. Led by Lale Virostek, Beatrix Stickney, Allison Kliber, and Gretchen Homer, these sessions explored various aspects of Advent prophecies, art, and music.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Deacon Nick Clinton and all the facilitators who made this spiritual journey a memorable and enriching experience.  Save the date for future events, and continue "Walking in the Light"!

Open House and Dedication

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Apostolate Center recently celebrated its Open House and Dedication and is now ready to begin sharing the beautiful culture of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd with families, communities, schools and parishes.

Last month, on October 22nd, we welcomed over 100 guests to tour the center and participate in a special dedication and blessing by Bishop Waltersheid.

The day began with an Open House, where guests had the opportunity to explore all 4 of our Atria. At 2 o'clock, Bishop Waltersheid led us through a special service where he blessed the entrance, hallways, and each atrium with Holy Water. He then incensed the hallway as the guests sang hymns of praise.

Pope St. John Paul II was chosen as the center's patron and a special prayer of consecration was recited by the board members along with Bishop Waltersheid . The dedication ended with the hanging of a blessed crucifix in the main hallway and the veneration of an embroidered image of St. John Paul II.

A lovely reception with plenty of charcuterie and homemade baked goods concluded the day's celebration.

Thank you to all who attended this special event! So much work has gone into transforming the former St. Joseph school space, and we are very excited to begin hosting more workshops, courses, retreats, and more!

Thank You for Your Support!

We are so very grateful to the amazing helping hands and hearts at the Center this summer!  Their donations of time, talent and treasures have transformed the rooms and hall of our Center.

Nancy Amarose has been using great energy to clean and spruce the rooms to provide a prayerful orderly environment.  We are also grateful to her husband Jim and his company for dismantling all the "extra stuff" that we couldn't use and donating comfortable chairs and counter with files for our adult discussion room.  They also donated the new carpeting for our future toddler atrium.

With Robin Mauser's creativity, our bulletin boards have been transformed into beautiful works of art reflecting the life of the Church and the parables of Jesus. Robin's other skills of organization and neatness have been put to great use in cleaning and organizing the many shelving units and supplies.

Sandy Zaremski has helped not only with all the cleaning and organizing, but also because of her vast experiences in the atrium, she has helped to set up the Level I atrium with the many materials related to the life of Jesus in Scripture and the Liturgy.  She donated our beautiful sacristy cabinet which is a copy of Sofia's cabinet in Level I.

Special retired friends, Mark Close and Dan Joscak, left their golf clubs for a few days and switched to paint brushes and rollers to paint two of the rooms.  The large rooms with 11' ceilings and many nooks and cubbies were a bit challenging even for these expert painters.

We are also grateful for the support of family and friends in many other ways, from small donations of items, financial contributions, renting trucks, moving, etc. May God continue to bless all of you as we watch the "work of our hands" producing much fruit for God's Kingdom.
